In the waning days of the California Gold Rush, immigrant groups began to settling into the muddy collection of hills and valleys that comprised the nascent San Francisco. German Americans and the Franciscan Friars exiled from their Prussian homeland during Otto von Bismark's anti-Catholic Kulturkampf campaign came together to create a special place in the City of Saint Francis.
